This is one heck of a difficult read but so worth it. Not fun like Dunnett's Lymond Chronicles but superb historical fiction unlike anything I had ever read. It begs for a lifetime of re-reads. SPOILER ALERT If you want to know what happened to Groa/Ingibjorg after the death of her beloved Thorfinn MacBeth, read Nigel Tranter's Margaret the Queen. But beware. Having sampled Dunnett and Tranter, you could become an addict and spend the rest of your life reading these two authors. They are addictive. Just a friendly warning from a Dunnett/Tranter addict. You cannot read a Dunnett novel just once. The first read of a Dunnett novel is like that first salty, greasy delicious potato chip. Enjoy. ~ Celeste DowneyTags : King Hereafter [Dorothy Dunnett] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. King Hereafter Dorothy Dunnett 9780375704031 Books Reviews
More years ago than I care to admit, a roommate who had access to new acquisitions at the university library introduced me to Dunnett's first historical series, and Game of Kings became my all time favorite historical fiction, re-read numerous times. A few years later I discovered that Dunnett had written a series and tracked down copies of all six.
Hooked, I started on the Nicolo series, but never liked the characters as well.
But Dunnett remained a favorite author, so I got King Hereafter when it came out and read it twice.
Now, years later, I've just re-read it for the third time, and I think it competes with Game of Kings for my favorite Dunnett novel.
As others have noted, it is dense and difficult at times, but probably not more than the two serials. Admittedly, I have a background in British and European history, and several languages, which helps. It is too bad it isn't included in the two volume Dunnett guide that covers the two series. But this is ultimately a book to savour slowly over several days, not a page turner, but a beautiful story. I can't remember when a novel last moved me to tears, but this one - even on the third time through - still has the power to do that.
This is not necessarily an easy read, but well worth the effort. Written with surprises, action, humor and just enough light romance to present fully developed characters. And the most fun of all, this historical novel is about a real person. There was a Macbeth, the Macbeth of Shakespearean fame, but this one is more approachable. I strongly suggest renting/watching the 2015 DVD with Michael Fassbender in the title role. Both Macbeths are scheming with the fatal flaw of ambition, but hey, what's wrong with that ?
Dunnett writes a good story, but sometimes, even with the genealogical charts in the back, it is hard to keep track of all the characters, given all of the varying territories and their interrelated families. Lots of great historical detail, but remember, this is historical fiction. There were some parts I wished had moved along a little quicker. Be prepared for the long haul it’s a lengthy tome, but enjoyable.
I have now read this book 3 times and read portions of it 5 times. It's not an easy read, the author uses terms that I cannot find in any dictionary and provides no guide for pronouncing the truly daunting Celtic names. The first time I read this book I was lost for half of it. All that being said, I love this book. It, like no other book in my personal library, transports me to another time, another world. Thorfinn and Groa are people that I know and like and admire, Lulach fascinates me and has moved me to much research and study. I have a great desire to visit the Orkney Isles after studying this book and it's a priority on my bucket list. I think this is a lot for a novel to inspire.
It is a little difficult to follow, especially in the beginning, when many new characters are introduced on almost every page. But, perseverance is well rewarded by the fascinating, fast-paced plot and unforgettable characters of Thorfinn, Groa, and many others. About the conflation of Thorfinn the Mighty with Macbeth I can’t comment, but I learned an incredible amount about the complex place and time of northern Europe in the years before the Norman Conquest of England. Highly recommended.
This is one heck of a difficult read but so worth it. Not fun like Dunnett's Lymond Chronicles but superb historical fiction unlike anything I had ever read. It begs for a lifetime of re-reads.
