I am an older reader and bought this book, not knowing it was a book for children and young adults. However, I read it with great enjoyment-- easy to read, entertaining, even for someone in my age bracket. I've since bought other books in the "My Story" series, and all the ones I've read have been very good. Even older people sometimes can enjoy reading simpler, more straight-forward children's books, and I certainly enjoyed this one.

Anne Boleyn and Me My Story Alison Prince 9780439978675 Books Reviews

This book is one in the My Story series. The books in this series are fictional diaries of young girls living during different periods of British, Scottish, and Irish history.

Elinor Valjean begins her diary in 1525, when she is eleven. As the daughter of a lady-in-waiting to Queen Catherine of England, she has grown up at court. Over the next few years, Elinor describes her daily life living among royalty, and how she eventually becomes a lady-in-waiting to Anne Boleyn. Elinor and her family sympathize with Queen Catherine because of their ties to her. But Anne Boleyn is determined to be queen, and King Henry VIII is determined to divorce Catherine, because she has failed to provide him with a son and is now too old to have any more children. But as Elinor's life becomes happy, as she grows up, falls in love, marries, and has children, Anne's only becomes worse, as she ends up disappointing Henry by failing to provide a living son.

This is my favorite book from the My Story series, and I highly recommend it to readers who are interested in the Tudor era or who enjoy historical fiction in diary form. I loved the setting, the historical detail was fascination, and Elinor was a likeable narrator.
Wow, this book is so good, and it is my favourite. It is set in the 16th century, when Anne Boleyn catches the eye of King Henry VIII. Henry wants a divorce from his devoting wife, Catherine of Aragon, but it takes 7 years until he is separated. This book is written in the eyes of a child, Elinor, who's mother was lady in waiting for Catherine of Aragon. Elinor finds love, and her years keep getting better, as the royal family's just gets worse. As Elinor describes the gossip, love, hate, betrayal, scandals and laws through the years of her diary, it goes down in history. This book is great for ages 11-adult, and it is described in a child's perspective. As I am training to be a Tudor historian and need all the information I can get, this book is a fantastic source, and it gives a timeline, family tree and the life if Anne Boleyn. This is the reason I got so intrigued into the world of Tudors!
I bought this book while in London. My 11 year old daughter LOVES books set in history. It is written in the form of a journal from a young girl who is in Anne Boleyn's court. She gives a very informative yet very easy-to-read and captivating view of what was going on with Anne, King Henry, and Queen Catherine. It is a very quick read. I read this aloud to my daughter every night. We cannot wait to find out what is going to happen with Anne each night!! We loved this book so much we bought some other My Royal Story books - Elizabeth, Mary Queen of Scotts, Victoria, Egyptian Princess, War Nurse and a few others. Unfortunately they are shipping from the UK as these books aren't from the U.S.
Even though I am very familiar with the Tudor period, I was surprised at the amount of historical information packed into this young adult novel about Anne Boleyn. Told from the perspective of Elinor Valjean, maid to first Queen Catherine of Aragon and then to Anne Boleyn, we see the rise and fall of one of history's most notorious women, and it's not a very flattering light in which she's cast.

Elinor makes no bones about her feelings for Anne; she's on Catherine's side and only serves Anne because Anne likes her (presumably for her musical abilities). Opposed to Anne from the get-go, there's seldom a nice word said about her in this "diary" that Elinor keeps. While Elinor herself grows up and marries, she keeps her gaze on both the wicked Anne and the saintly Catherine (through her mother's and sister's continued employ in Catherine's household). Elinor reports mostly on the major events of the times, and only toward the end does her opinion of Anne alter as she watches the queen face her accusers and death with dignity.

This book is highly readable, cut into easily digestible, sporadic diary entries. If Elinor is very opposed to Anne, that can be forgiven as the book is seen through her eyes. I did grow a bit weary of her continued reinforcement of the stereotypes of both Anne and Henry, and this really doesn't offer new take on the story. Still, it would be a good entry into history for a young adult as it does tell the tale from a generally interesting viewpoint.
As a historian, I purchased this book for my daughter, hoping to present her with an account of a flawed woman who struggled to bring reformation to the church. Instead of a subjective interpretation by the author, Anne Boleyn was vilified. Those looking for a story about a young girl in the court of Henry VIII might enjoy it.
Shows a different side of Anne Boleyn from the usual.
